| A note on onomatology
The name Ramsay was first recorded as associated with an English (presumably Norman French-speaking) noble family in the years after the Conquest. A Simon de Ramsay was given a grant of land in Scotland in the twelfth century, and the family apparently insinuated itself into the native clan system. It is variously spelled: the Clan Ramsay Association of North America recognizes Ramsay, Ramsey, and even Ramezay.
